Material Flow Analysis to Evaluate Sustainability in Supply Chains

Abstract

The study of raw materials flows becomes a decision-making tool to improve the management of resources and to evaluate environmental issues from the producer's viewpoint to the consumer's one. This paper presents the Material Flow Analysis (MFA) method for evaluating sustainability in supply chains. In terms of decision-making, MFA can be used to analyze and improve the effectiveness of measures and to design efficient management strategies to improve sustainability in supply chains. This paper presents a preliminary overview of academic works related with the applications of MFA to the analysis of sustainability in supply chains. Literature is evaluated and classified according to certain criteria and opportunities for further research are identified.
