Product service Systems: exploitation or exploration strategies?

Abstract : This paper deals with the innovation processes that underpin the development of product -service systems (PSS) by industrial companies: Is servitization a result of exploitative or explorative innovation, or of a form of organizational ambidext erity ? We assume that the underlying innovation process greatly depends on the type of PSS and servitization strategy. Especially, the greater the business model change, the more it is based on an exploration strategy. The contribution of this research is twofold: first, it emphasizes the interest of the notions of exploitation and exploration for the research on servitization. Second, it proposes and in part validates the assumption that the development of product, use or result-oriented PSS relies on different innovation processes.
