Impact of green transport technologies on CO 2 emissions from the transportation sector

Résumé

This study examines the impact of green innovation technologies in shaping CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. It develops an empirical model based on an ARDL approach using data covering the period 1995-2014. The results show that the impact of green innovation on Co2 emissions in the transportation sector is very weak or even nonexistent both in the short and long-run. However, renewable energies and countries' wealth tend to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector. These results show the extent to which green technologies in transportation are a necessary but not sufficient condition for reducing CO2 emissions. From a policy perspective, green technologies should be coupled with proactive policies aiming to reduce polluting transport activities and enhancing renewable energies. Nudging user behavior in favor of the use of soft (bicycle) and collective (train, carpooling) modes of transportation constitute and important lever for reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation sector.
