Study of the influence of the incorporation of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn Algerian wood powder on the hydration kinetics of cement slurry

Abstract : To reduce the problem of incompatibility between wood and cement, a treatment of the wood reinforcement with boiling water may be a solution to remove compounds that inhibit cement setting. The effect of the wood powder content of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn natural and heat-treated with boiling water on the hydration kinetics was studied by isothermal calorimetry, conductimetry and thermogravimetry (TGA). The wood powder slightly reduces gypsum consumption and delays the hydration of the silicate phases. At high concentrations of 25% and 30% by weight, wood strongly delays the precipitation of portlandite. At contents of 10 wt.% wood powder, the treatment did not show any efficiency on the hydration kinetics, at 20% of treated wood the cement hydration is accelerated compared to the control. Wood extractives did not affect the formation of ettringite due to the presence of wood sulphate ions.
