This paper is subsequent to the publication "Paleogeography of the Ardèche canyon from the Lower Cretaceous to the Oligocene" (Jolivet et al, 2022). The objective, by the approach of tectonics, geomorphology and geochemistry, is to understand the distribution of fluvial circulations during the Paleogene as well as at the geological interface represented by the Lower Oligocene-Miocene, at the beginning of the incision of the Ardèche canyon in the Neogene. The geographical setting of this wide sedimentary unit extends from the Triassic borders of the Cévennes to the east, passing successively to the Jurassic terrains, to end in the West with the vast Lower Cretaceous carbonate entity of the Bas Vivarais and Garrigues regions included in the departments of Ardèche and Gard. The Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene paleo-covers have obliterated the Barremo-Aptian platform and favoured fluvial circulations forming deltas, braided channels or valleys of various sizes. The orientation of the flows, from the end of the Mesozoïc and until the end of the Paleogene, is however difficult to interpret. Influenced by variations of the Thetys Alpine seas, only the regional base levels (represented by the Alès and Rhône grooves) seem to have been preferential collectors during these periods. In view of its geographical position and its geological nature, the Alès trench has given the Ardèche river a N-S fluvial flow orientation in the Upper Cretaceous then NW to SE during the Paleogene. Tectonic conjunctures linked to eustatic and climatic evolutions during the Paleogene have amplified the successive captures of aerial flows, before rhythmically incising the Ardèche canyon at the beginning of the Miocene. To better discuss the endokarstic formation of the levelled summit area of the Saint-Remèze plateau located respectively on the right and left banks of the current Ardèche, a new geological and geochemical approach was conducted to better understand the physiographic processes of this evolution between the lower Eocene and the Oligocene. Recent field observations from the central area of the Saint-Remèze and the bois de Ronze plateaus offer a different concept on the origin of the evolution of this paleo-karst. A characterisation protocol through geochemical ICP-AES completed by X-ray diffraction of Paleogene samples, referenced on the geological maps of Bourg Saint Andéol-889 and Pont Saint Esprit-913, makes it possible to compare the geochemical signatures of unpublished sandstone and clay samples at the surface and in the caves of the Ardèche karstic plateaus (Jolivet et al, 2020).

Cet article fait suite à la publication " La paléogéographie du canyon de l'Ardèche du Crétacé inférieur à l'Oligocène" (Jolivet et al, 2022). La question était de comprendre par l'approche de la tectonique, de la géomorphologie et de la géochimie, la répartition des circulations fluviatiles durant le Paléogène ainsi qu'à l'interface géologique représentée par l'Oligocène-Miocène inférieur, début de l'incision du canyon de l'Ardèche au Néogène. L'espace géographique de ce vaste ensemble sédimentaire s'étend des bordures triasiques des Cévennes à l'Est en passant successivement aux terrains du Jurassique pour se terminer à l'Ouest par la vaste entité carbonatée du Crétacé inférieur des régions du Bas Vivarais et des Garrigues incluses dans les départements de l'Ardèche et du Gard. Les paléo-couvertures du Crétacé supérieur et du Paléogène ont oblitéré la plateforme barremo-aptienne et favorisé les circulations fluviatiles formant des deltas, des chenaux anastomosés ou des vallées de dimensions variées. L'orientation des écoulements, dès la fin du Mésozoïque et jusqu'à la fin du Paléogène, est cependant difficilement interprétable. Influencé par les variations des mers de la Thétys Alpine, seuls les niveaux de base régionaux (représentés par les sillons d'Alès et du Rhône) semblent avoir été des collecteurs préférentiels pendant ces périodes. Au regard de sa position géographique et de sa nature géologique, le sillon d'Alès a donné à la rivière Ardèche une orientation d'écoulement fluviatile N-S au Crétacé supérieur puis NO à SE durant le Paléogène. Les conjonctures tectoniques liées aux évolutions eustatiques et climatiques du Paléogène ont amplifié les captures successives des écoulements aériens avant d'inciser de façon rythmée le canyon de l'Ardèche au début du Miocène. Pour mieux aborder la formation endokarstique des zones sommitales arasées du plateau de St Remèze situées respectivement en rives droite et gauche de l'Ardèche actuelle, une nouvelle approche géologique et géochimique a été menée pour mieux appréhender les processus physiographiques de cette évolution entre l'Eocène inférieur et l'Oligocène.A partir de la zone centrale des plateaux de St Remèze et du bois de Ronze, des observations de terrain récentes proposent un autre concept sur l'origine de l'évolution de ce paléo-karst. Un protocole de caractérisation par analyse géochimique ICP-AES complété par diffraction X d'échantillons du Paléogène référencés sur la carte géologique de Bourg Saint Andéol-889 et Pont St Esprit-913 permet de comparer les signatures géochimiques d'échantillons inédits, gréseux et argileux, en surface et dans les cavités des plateaux karstiques ardéchois (Jolivet et al, 2020).
