Suivi hydrologique des sources karstiques et de la rivière Cèze

Abstract : The purpose of this article is to present the results of hydrological monitoring of the Cèze river basin in its limestone zone with a protocol based on synchronizing flow measurements in the river with those of the springs. The aim is to understand the functioning of the river and karst springs and to determine their contribution to the flow of the Ceze. Fourteen stations were equipped with LTC probes (Height, Temperature and Conductivity): 11 probes at each source and 3 in the river. Previously, an altimetric profile made it possible to geolocate the sources and anthropogenic areas as well as the suitable sections of the river for gauging. To precisely locate the loss zones of the Ceze and detremine the corresponding flow values, 11 gauge campaigns were carried out in rivers during three hydrological cycles from 2013 to 2015. Source flows were also measured to calculate hydraulic balance between losses and inflows along the study section. The results show variability in sources flows related to the size of the drained watershed and the underground geological configuration. Several sources have a relatively constant flow over the year and thus contribute to compensate the losses of the river. Five sections have been identified alternating areas of losses and karst input from the springs. Analysis of the flows measured during the gauge campaigns carried out over the entire sector studied made it possible to quantify these losses and karst inputs. Comparison of karst inputs according to the measurement period shows that during low water periods the karst contributes more strongly up to 68% of the Ceze river flow, whereas on average water period, karst contributes about 50% of the river flow. The critical analysis of the results obtained focuses on the quality of the differential gauges in the river and those carried out at the sources, the accuracy of the measuring equipment used and the difficulty of taking into account the underflows and recycling of water from the river through alluvial formations. Over the entire river area studied, incorporating all karst springs, the differential between the flow of the Ceze upstream of the gorges and that downstream of the karst springs is positive. For the moment the karst inputs compensate for the losses of the Ceze.
